Jordan Spieth defies caddie’s advice, pulls off bold birdie from tough lie at Memorial

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Jordan Spieth’s aggressive style was on full display during Thursday’s opening round at the Memorial. Faced with a brutal lie on the fifth hole, his caddie advised a safe chip-out. Spieth declined.

Instead, Spieth attempted a bold shot from thick rough, narrowly reaching the fairway. He then stuck his approach to 25 feet and drained the putt for birdie, salvaging an improbable result from a risky decision.

Spieth later admitted the shot wasn’t wise and likely wouldn’t work most times. But true to form, he embraced the gamble, saying he struggles to accept conservative plays — even when they make the most sense.
