Backflips, hat-tricks and clutch finishes: the best moments of Chelsea in Sam Kerr.
It is not an easy goal to achieve the 150th appearance wearing a Chelsea jersey and Sam Kerr achieved it in the best possible way with a 2-0 victory over Liverpool. To celebrate the event, the vaults have been unlocked and supporters are encouraged to give their vote on the defining moment of an era that has been filled with memorable moments of goals and drama.
The Chelsea experience of Kerr has been more of survival than success. She returned after a long absence of 634 days off the bench in September and her first match was against Aston Villa. The scenario was ideal: a goal on her return, a 3-1 win, and her 100 th goal in the club in a single memorable afternoon.
Now that another WSL record has been broken, it is time to have a new glance at the events that have made Kerr leave a legacy in blue.
An introduction to the Chelsea,–and a statement.
Having signed on at the end of 2019 after having played with Perth Glory and Chicago Red Stars, Kerr took no ages to settle down. Her debut in Chelsea happened in January 2020 against Reading and she announced herself after two weeks. Her first goal was a headed goal against Arsenal and it was an indication of what is yet to come.
Built for finals
Big stages have ever done Kerr his best. In March 2021, she scored a hat-trick in the Conti Cup final to demolish Bristol City to win the club another trophy. Individual recognition came later that season as well with her 21 st league goal on the last day of the season winning the WSL Golden Boot and contributing to the provision of the league championship.
She was back in the limelight at Wembley stadium later in 2021. Kerr scored twice, including a chip, in a postponed FA Cup final with Arsenal as a domestic triple is achieved by the Chelsea Club.
When titles were on the line
Kerr has seldom been put off by the pressure situations. Chelsea topped the 2021/22 season on the penultimate day and had to win over Manchester United to earn a third consecutive league title. Kerr, who trailed at the break, managed the take over, firing two sensational volleys that made the match and the title race a reversal.
A few days later she again showed her decisive qualities by scoring an extra-time goal against Manchester City to save Chelsea a penalty shoot-out and win another trophy.
Records, records, records
The milestones kept coming. In April 2023, Kerr was the first non European player to score 50 WSL goals in a mundane victory over Aston Villa. She would then become the difference again a month later, again in an FA cup final, where she scored the winner against Manchester United – and her now-famous backflip.
European nights had their own attractions. In November 2023, at Stamford Bridge, Kerr scored her first hat-trick in the Women Competition hat-trick in the Women Champions League against Paris FC and topped it off by the most perfect trifle, a looping strike which sent the crowd into a frenzy.
A return worth the wait
Kerr took time to come back to the scene after an ACL injury wiped out a good part of 2024. But when it finally arrived in September of 2025 it was impact immediate. She scored out of the bench at Villa Park, not only to get the victory home – but also to get 100 goals in Chelsea. An eyelid to the nose, had it needed it, of just what the Blues had been wanting.
Since the first ambitions of debut to season-making strikes, the career of Kerr in Chelsea will be full of moments that fans will discuss throughout their lives. She has 150 appearances in her rear view mirror, which one of them are the best?
