British No. 1 Emma Raducanu has terminated her coaching relationship with Francis Roig after her premature Australian open exit.
At the age of 23, the young tennis player retired in the second round at Melbourne park where he lost in straight sets to Austria, Anastasia Potapova. Raducanu had been linked to Roig since August and the Spaniard has come with a host of experience of having assisted Rafael Nadal in winning a tally of 16 of his 22 Grand Slam titles.
Corroborating the split on Instagram, Raducanu even said that he would not be able to end the time with Roig without mentioning that he was more than a coach and that he owed him not only the professional experience but also the personal time they shared. She also said that they both agreed to stop upon hearing each other, but she would never forget what she learnt in the process of their collaboration.
The exit of Roig leaves Raducanu searching again in search of a new coach which is the 10th coach of her professional life. Changes have continued to become a sequel ever since her US open victory in 2021 when she amazed the world with her performance.
When Raducanu lost in Melbourne, she gave some signs of having issues with her current approach on the court, indicating that she prefers the corner-hitting but not variety-dependent style of play. The remarks were the source of speculation regarding the tensions in her team, which was later verified by the sources to the BBC Sport.
Nevertheless, at that moment, Raducanu did not want to blame Roig, claiming that the two were moving forward well and that they had worked on some aspects of her game. She did admit though that it was hard to judge anything after a show where nothing much went.
Raducanu will resume playing in the Transylvania Open in Romania between February 1 and 7 as she tries to reset and rejuvenate.
The former US open champion has employed a lengthy list of coaches since he made his debut on the stage. Her childhood mentor Nick Cavaday served the longest span of 2024 to 2025 before resigning because of health reasons. Nigel Sears had directed her breakout Wimbledon run in 2021 earlier in her career, and Andrew Richardson had directed her fairy-tale US Open win, a coupleing that crumbled only a few weeks later.
She has also spent brief affairs with Torben Beltz, Dmitry Tursunov, Sebastian Sachs, Vladimir Platenik and Mark Petchey as she tries to find the right long-term partner.
