Canada’s Leylah Fernandez secured a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory over the Netherlands’ Suzan Lamens on Monday, advancing to the second round of the Lexus Nottingham Open grass-court tournament.
The fifth seed from Laval, Que., recorded three aces and limited her double faults to just two, capitalizing on Lamens’ inconsistency. Both players struggled on serve, exchanging breaks in a tightly contested match.
Fernandez, 22, snapped a four-match losing streak and improved to 13-14 on the season. She now awaits the winner of Tuesday’s match between Yuliia Starodubtseva and Cristina Bucsa.
